Competition Structure
The contest is organized into three televised shows: two Semi-Finals and one Grand Final. Most participating countries must qualify through the semi-finals by finishing in the top positions of their respective show.
All performances are delivered live. Instrumental backing tracks are permitted, but the lead vocals must be performed live without pitch correction.
Scoring System
The winner is determined through a dual voting system that combines professional assessment and public voting.
- Professional Juries: Each country appoints music industry professionals who rank entries based on performance, composition, and originality. Their results account for 50% of the final score.
- Televote: Viewers vote by phone, SMS, or app. This represents the remaining 50% of the total score. Countries cannot vote for their own entry.
Jury scores are announced first, followed by the combined public vote totals, which can significantly alter the final ranking.
The “Big Five” Rule
The Big Five — France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom — automatically qualify for the Grand Final. The host country also receives automatic qualification.
This arrangement reflects their financial contribution to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the organization responsible for the contest.
Musical Range and Staging
The competition includes multiple genres, from pop and ballads to rock and electronic music. Each act has three minutes to perform.
Stage presentation is a key component. Performances may include lighting effects, choreography, and digital backdrops. Visual execution can influence overall audience reception.
Entries may be performed in any language. While English is common, recent winners have performed in their native languages, contributing to the distinct cultural character of the contest.
